Since long I desired to give my daughter (24 years young and the better artist in the house!) one of my creations. Since she has quite a large collection of earrings, I bought a small wooden jewelry box for her. The top was flat so ideal for painting it!
I chose one of her favourite items and animals, next to cats, namely a wolf. We have those around in Belgium but luckily not anywhere around the coast where we live.
The wooden box had a size of 4,5"x6" and was first sandpapered, received one layer of black gesso and then some some liquid white was applied on it. Six colours were used for this: T-white, Cad yellow, Cad red, P-blue, VDBrown and I-black.
Because of the small surface and the easy composition, this creation was done in a record time of 35 minutes.
Hardest part was to paint the wolf since it was a small object to paint and really had to stand out. Due to the bright background, I chose a darkgrey wolf iso a black one.
Hope you all might try box painting once, it really is something special. Please read the article!!
Indeed Sandy, she is a wolf addict and will surely appreciate it. She doesn't like what I do with Bob Ross very much but will really go wild with such creations!
And like I wrote, she IS the better artist (pencil, paintpens, markers, acrylic) in the house but forbid me to ever show something of hers on the site. I respect that!
Very nice! Love the texture of the wolf's fur!
Great idea! Will it be a christmas present?
aooooooo!!!nice doggy V!Im partial to the lupine beasts ..Being a lone wolf myself!
Beautiful.
Very nice, love the wolf. Great to have you back painting again Voy 🙏
A wonderful creation and what a fabulous idea to do it on a wooden box.
Thank you Pam!
I used a base layer of dark grey for the fur and then added black strips on it with a very short Nr. 1 brush. Normally I would use a Nr. 0 with long hairs but due to the miniature size of the animal, that wasn't possible.
I was happy to have created the desired result of that fur at first attempt!
Hello Felix!! Yes, she will receive it tomorrow at X-mas dinner, together with a pair of earrings!
Hope the paint will dry very soon!!
HAHA lone wolf Pietro, so happy to see ya!
Yes, I am a dog and specially cat lover myself although I like to keep wolves at a desitance! Luckily they are shy animals and will avoid contact/conflict with humans most of the time.
Umagaan, it's been SO long!! VERY pleased to see you!
Thanks Barbara!
Several artists here on 2inch have experimented before with wooden boxes. They are really fun to do but also so easy to handle (at least that's my opinion).
I intend to do more in the future because those should be rather easy to give away as a present or sell them. Wish I could lay my hands on some (budget) animal shaped wood but here in Belgium, that costs a small fortune!!
Nivek, so pleased you like that wolf. And to imagine it's only 4 centimeters by 5. That was really hard to paint since my dominant hand has issues.
I very much like the 'welcome back', Kevin, much appriciated!!
What a neat idea! Great work on this and your daughter will no doubt love it.
Hi Debbie, so great to read your cheers!
She received it yesterday evening over dinner and was pretty enthousiast. I can never do wrong to her by giving her something related to wolfs, cats or a Porsche!!
Now it remains in the living room to dry further before she will use it in her room, she has plenty of earrings and so to stuff it with.
I really like this! I can just hear her howling! Beautiful!
Hehe, many thanks Sarah!
I was SO please I got the fur right at first attempt, since small figures are very difficult for me.
Till next one!
Great work! what is it about wolves and our kids eh? lol
